Dr. Xueli Zou
is a physics professor at In collaboration
with Drs. Van Heuvelen and Etkina,
Dr. Xueli Zou has been
developing, testing, and implementing the ISLE in calculus-based introductory
mechanics and electricity and magnetism courses for engineering and science
majors. Here are a couple of quotes from her ISLE students: “This class is very different
from other physics classes I took before. The skill that I have learned in
this course will help me with my logical thinking, and I might even get to
use it in the right situation.” “I liked the design experiments
we did in the labs. They challenge the student to think about all of the
possible aspects contributing to a problem, and how to control or account for
them in order to solve said problem. A deeper understanding of
mathematics is acquired through the modeling practice. It involves creativity and abstract
thinking to apply available materials and tools in a manner that can collect
data and isolate dependent variables. Because of the greater challenge,
it encourages effective group communication in reasoning, design,
analysis, derivations, and assessments. It is also encouraging that
there are no penalties for mistakes as long as reasoning, application,
testing, and conclusions are logically sound.” |
