Food Colouring in Water: Testing Experiment

Aim

The following experiment aims to test the following mechanism of alcohol disappearance: Alcohol disappears because the little pieces of liquid are moving and therefore some are able to escape from the surface of the liquid by the fact that they are moving. If this model is correct, what do you predict would happen if a drop of food colouring is placed in a beaker of water? What do you predict would happen to the colouring if the pieces of liquid were not moving?

Prior Knowledge

  1. Mechanisms through which alcohol dries developed and discarded through the previous videos.

Description of the Experiment

A drop of food colouring is placed in a beaker of water (same experiment can be repeated with alcohol). Predict what will happen to the colouring based on a mechanism that the little pieces of liquid are moving. What do you predict would happen if the little pieces were not moving?

Questions

Describe the outcome of the experiment. What can you say about the mechanism of moving particles? Was it proved? Disproved? How can you explain the drying of wet things now?
